“Once upon a time” are 4 very simple but very powerful words
From a very early age, we are exposed to the power of storytelling by virtue of these 4 simple words that would transport us into the world of dreams and romance, bravery and heroism, fantasy and delight. Since the beginning of the human race, we have been telling stories to warn each other of danger, to inspire each other and to glimpse answers even to some of humanity’s most profound questions, such as ‘How should I live my life well and happily?’ and even ‘What is the meaning of life?’
We have been telling stories of love and romance, bravery and triumphs, heroism and selflessness for time immemorial, whereas tools such as Excel and PowerPoint came less than 4 decades ago.
Now what do you think is more powerful for getting the point through to your audience when it really matters?
Science tells us that when we tell stories, our bodies produce a hormone called oxytocin, also known as the love hormone, and we start bonding instantly with the person telling the story. As oxytocin is associated with trust, sexual arousal, breastfeeding and relationship building. Stories bind us together
The Power of Storytelling
It is fascinating to see how we as adults would go and spend our hard-earned money to watch a movie, say, James Bond, and we immerse ourselves for about two hours into the fictional world of the amazing character played by a charismatic lead actor, and we sit on the edge of our chair, gasping and holding our breath as we witness this handsome chap make his way through an absolutely mind-boggling series of fictional events ultimately leading to the climax. And at the end of the movie as we get off of our chairs, we feel inspired and empowered, and we heave a sigh of relief, Pfff! What a show! What an amazing man this James Bond! What a style! What a Charisma! Phew! I Wish I could be more like him!
And then suddenly, out of nowhere, an idea strikes you, and you go to a store and end up paying $10,000 for an Omega watch, and you do so willingly and delightfully! And as this watch sways on your wrist the next morning as you fasten your cufflinks, you feel indeed a little bit like Bond. Isn’t this fascinating? But my question is, does this work only for luxurious items such as Omega watches, or can it work for something rather menial as well?

To answer this question, i.e., to determine if storytelling was the most powerful tool of all, Rob Walker, a New York Times Magazine journalist, set out on a journey. He called this literary and anthropological experiment Significant Objects. He started this project by collecting two hundred thrift items of low value (the average cost of each item was $1.25). He took care to ensure that there was nothing particularly special about any of them.
A plastic banana here. An old wooden mallet there. Even a plastic motel room key. You get the idea. They had no intrinsic value whatsoever. Next, he telephoned two hundred professional authors and invited them to become part of his ‘Significant Object study’ and asked them if they would each write a story about one of the objects.
Surprisingly!?
They all said, “Yes.”
He then auctioned the items on eBay with the stories added to the descriptions. Can you guess what happened? One of the items was a small plastic bust of a horse’s head. Rob had paid just $0.99 for it.
What did it sell for now that it had a great story attached to it?
$62.95.

How did that happen?
Question: Was this a one-off? Was this an exception?
Absolutely not! In total, he spent $197 on the items, and he ended up selling them for almost $8000.
That’s a markup of more than 6300%!
And all thanks to the stories which had transformed these otherwise rubbish objects into things of value.
That’s the power of storytelling!
Lesson: People don’t buy objects! People buy stories!
